CR9 was 100% fit to play against Hungary!
Portugal national coach Carlos Queiroz has defended his decision to start with the winger in the World Cup qualifier against Hungary, insisting the Real Madrid man was in a playable condition.
“Ronaldo was on the pitch because I was sure he was one hundred per cent fit to play. He was approved by the medical staff and we were very confident that Cristiano was perfect to play,” Queiroz told reporters.
“Cristiano had clear instructions from my side that if he felt something then he should immediately stop. The most important thing was to protect him and to make sure nothing bad could happen after the game.
“He didn’t have time to make an impact. Hungary were still fresh, they still had legs and were double marking him. However, I felt that it was one of those special days for Cristiano. I felt that from the beginning and it’s unfortunate that he had to leave the pitch due to injury.
“It’s a pity that Cristiano didn’t play in the first two games of this qualification due to injury. In the following two games he wasn’t fully fit either. During all the qualifying matches we have suffered injuries and players who have had problems, but I hope in the future everything will be alright.”
Queiroz’s revelations contradict earlier comments from Ronaldo, who claimed that he only played because he wanted to help Portugal to a good result.
“I felt very good, although I was not 100 per cent and had a little bit of a twinge. But I wanted to play and to help my country to qualify for the World Cup,” the player was quoted as saying by AS.
Ronaldo will miss big match against AC Milan
Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has been ruled out of their Champions League double-header against AC Milan.
Ronaldo suffered a new ankle injury in Portugal’s 3-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Hungary.
Tests have now revealed the injury is worse than at first thought, as Real medical staff confirm he will be out for three to four weeks.
“After a clinical examination and an MRI scan, it is confirmed the player has suffered a recurrence of his injury to his right ankle, a medial collateral sprain with inflammation in the bone,” explained a statement.
“The estimated recovery time is three to four weeks.”
This means Ronaldo will miss both the Group C encounters with Milan, which could well be decisive for qualification.
The Rossoneri travel to the Bernabeu on October 21 and then welcome Real to San Siro on November 3.
